It was in the dead of the night that a lone figure made his way through lightly snow-covered streets, long past the curfews imposed upon the city by the new decrees passed by that crazed lunatic of a king that belonged now to Avaren.
The figure did not make any effort to hide away from the prying eyes of guards, so it was fortunate that he somehow managed to avoid running into any patrols as before he reached his destination.
Upon arriving at the doors to the Chapel, he gave them a small push, only to find them locked tight against him. With a small sigh, he muttered a few ancient words and gave the door another small push. With a creaking groan, the door slowly swung open this time, allowing him admittance into the Chapel. Walking foreword, he made a point of lighting several candles until he stood before the central altar; where he fell to one knee as if in prayer.

It was very late at night, much past when any sort of disturbance was to be expected, yet it was that Vidar found himself awakened abruptly, a messenger knocking at his door to beg admittance. So it was that he found out that there had been seen light within the Chapel, much to the surprise of the city watch, who had been sure they had locked up tightly upon lights out in the city, yet there was still the clear evidence of an intruder within. It was a matter in which they wished for Vidar and no other in order to handle.
Accompanied by a number of guards, as was his fashion, Vidar went swiftly down to investigate this rumor.
Surely enough, before he had even arrived at the Chapel; he could see the clear evidence that one had made entry into the house of the lord. Ordering his men to have their weapons at ready, he himself was the first to burst within to see who dared tread upon sacred ground in the dead of the night when all should be locked away within their homes.
"Intruder, whoever you are, I place you under arrest in the name of Avaren." he commanded in a clear tone, seeing the somewhat huddled figure near the head of the church.

"Heh heh heh," Rylith chuckled almost inaudibly to himself, a slight smirk on his face. The king had come in person, just as he had planned. Now it was time to trick him and walk off unscathed just as he had done to those fools in the shanty town.
Turning, he drew his hood from his face, revealing a twisting mess of scars that criss-crossed over his face, distorting his features and giving him an almost gruesome appearance, as though he had suffered terrible burns at some point earlier in his life.
"I do not know what you mean, my lord," he said, holding his hands out in surrender, "I only come to this most holy of holy places to seek shelter from the cold after wandering for so very long. Would you deny a poor beggar a shelter if it were to be so easily provided for him?" he asked.

Vidar was taken momentarily aback by the intruder’s appearance, disfigured as he was, yet kept a calm outward demeanor and replied in turn to his foolish ramblings.
"You should know precisely what I mean, for this land is plagued with evil and my laws are in place in order to help save my people from this evil; those laws which you wantonly seem inclined to disobey, which is now your ultimate undoing," he stated, giving a brief gesture, resulting in his guards fanning out to surround the man in the case that he attempt to make a break for it.
"I wonder, too, how you might get yourself inside both a city that closes it's gates after sunset and a Chapel that is also supposed to be barred to all after hours." he said, as if this alone were damning enough. "Also, you bear the look of one of the heretics that plague us so, which would explain your seemingly mysterious powers. Explain yourself."

"To explain myself I must first ask you: if I were as evil as one of those heretics you so fear, or even one of them, could I tread upon this consecrated ground within the Chapel so freely?" he asked, looking around at the assembled warriors who surrounded him, "Would not the doors of this Chapel be barred before me instead of nearly swinging open a the slightest touch as if to invite me?"
"Also, you attribute my appearance to my true nature. Would not the machinations of evil manifest themselves in beauty? For if all evil were plain and simple to see upon each persons face, then there would be no problems taking care of it; yet most accept that great evil often takes a form pleasing to the eye, so as to confuse the mind and cause us to be blind to faith." he explained, having rehearsed exactly what he intended to say beforehand, "I will admit that I was not always one of faith and that I only turned to god after a serious accident that claimed the lives of all I held dear and nearly myself, yet the important thing is that I did turn to god of my own volition and stand in his name still."
"I may disobey the laws that apply to the common man, yet I am no common man," he continued, trying to stray now to the actual matters, still trying to remain neutral in his tone, "But I believe I have good reason, for there are forces outside of your city that seek to work against you that I have knowledge of, which might be very useful to you; especially as it involves one David Augustine, Alezand Jozlyn, a mysterious city of mages and a small town on the outskirts of your vast kingdom that shelters the evil ones and is making ready for war against you."

Vidar, knowing there was naught he could say to refute this man's claims regarding his appearance, chose instead to keep to dignified silence and not comment any further on his alignment with good or evil, instead focusing on other aspects of what he had said.
"Alezand was absolved personally by myself of his crimes against Avaren, for he has proven himself to be true of faith and of heart upon this very ground upon which you stand and use as evidence towards your refuting accusations of heresy." Vidar said simply, as though his word was the final say and nothing could be said to contradict him.
"As for David," he continued, "We have known long that he plots against my divine rule and had gone fleeing into hiding like the coward he is. This is no new news to me. Although," he said, actually giving some note of importance to this final piece of news, "I would like to ask for any news you bear regarding rebellious towns and of the hiding place of the mages, for once again can we marshal our strength. After all, our forces, which we had expected to take on serious casualties in their last campaign, were left almost untouched, as we were led on by false information."

"I think," Rylith said in response to Vidar's opinion of Alezand, speaking slowly as if testing the waters, making certain to say nothing that might seem like he were outright calling the king a liar, "That, though Alezand might once have been a proud and noble knight, his victory has given rise to a horrible sin. Pride, it would seem, has consumed him, for how he tells the tale of your purity test he claims to have been outnumbered and under armed and emerged victorious soon. The way he tells it he seems inclined to have people believe that he single-handedly thwarted you and your entire royal guard!" he said, hoping this would be more than sufficient to rail Vidar's anger against the knight.
"As such, he would now have you dethroned, most likely to try and take your place, for his head has grown far to fat for his shoulders now and requires your divine assistance in parting the two." he said simply, with a small shrug.
"For the nest of vermin that the mages city is, while I can't tell you where it is, I highly doubt they will set forth to help Alezand, for it didn't seem like he was any great friend of theirs, only hoping that they will align themselves with him to fight against you. Yet as far as war goes, I would advise you not to bring the war to them, as it is what they bank their battle plans upon, seeking instead to amass great defense and weather the storm of your fury from a time a place of their choosing. It is your purging of the impure that seem to anger them so, thus I advise continuing on with your holy work until their anger seethes over and they come to you to fight, in which case you will be ready to crush them with a single stroke."

Kendall was sound asleep, when he was awoke the to the sound of the royal summoner. There was an intruder in the Chapel and the King and his guards were on the move, Kendall and about 11 others were to go in support of his Majesty. Shooting out of bed and dressing with practiced routine Kendall was down and out racing through the vacant city streets and toward the Chapel with about a dozen other men within mere heartbeats of the first word. It seemed that the King himself was overseeing the response to this apparent intrusion.
As the militia neared the Chapel, Kendall could make out the King and his guard just ahead approaching at about the same rate. Following in tow, Kendall and the rest of his unit were summoned as a contingent should anything go awry. Falling in once they entered the chapel Kendall stood at the end of a broad sweeping arc of men observing the situation from a distance. The voices echoed through the empty Chapel making them audible even at a whisper and Kendall listened to the exchange between the tattered man and Lord Vidar. Kendall recognized the robes of the one speaking as the member of the crowd who was chastising the speaker who attempted to rally a defense force for the village.
“That isn’t an entirely accurate assessment of the situation Ma’lord…”
Kendall spoke before his mind could tell him not to, realizing his mistake Kendall stood as solid as a statue. He knew the King heard, how could you not, it was almost if God himself amplified the voices in his house louder levels. Nervous beads of sweat began to form on his brow, Kendall was telling the truth but he had spoken out of order, to the King of all people. But it was imperative that he know that he was being fed half truths. Kendall had no doubt that he would know, though for some unseen reason he felt compelled to caution his lord.
