Well then, it seems something a lot of people have had recent problems with are other players giving themselves random pets, namely dragons.
Of course, the theory is that people can get whatever pet they want, so long as it stays small until they are much higher level. After all, what harm can a creature that's the equivalent of a scaled pigeon do to someone other than bite their ankles?
Problem is, seems that when people are granted pets, they are quick to abuse them. As such, I was debating adding a "pets" list to the rest of the shop items. Some would be almost dirt cheap, such as basic mounts as horses or mules, while some would be very expensive, such as dragons or griffons, with level requirements to boot.
Of course, we'd need a decent list of mounts first, not to mention I'd only do this if people would think it an improvement.

Well, putting a price on them on a shop would definitely be an improvement. It would stop people from abusing their pets and making them more powerful then what they really are and what not. It would also keep the people that planned on getting a pet such as a dragon or something else instead of them leaving for good because they found out that they couldn't have it or something like that. The way I see it is how could a low level character be able to control an all most overwhelming powerful beast. That and when they incountered higher level opponents or equals that they were totally over powering them. As your idea stands, I see it as an improvement. Though I bit more detail would be needed such as the growth rate of certain creatures and ect.

You could base it off of the Pokemon games. When you reach a level... it evolves into a bigger, scarier version..? I think it'd be an improvement acause people would still get shiny pets and stuff.

I believe they are not referring to dogs....
But, as towards a list of pets, I say that any mythical creature be reserved for level 6 or 7, mainly due to the many views around them. I mean, there are thousands of different ideas on how dragons are. In Harry Potter, some are poisonous. In Eragon, they are sentient and can use magic. In China, they are snakelike and stuff like that. We'd really have to nail down concrete details on the mythical creatures, or we'd have to allow people to say their pet can do whatever they want.

I agree Cain, and am willing to help make this list if you need to.
This is an issue that needs to be addressed, not just with dragons but with mounts. If I catch another dragon in Avaren it will be captured and beheaded as the last one was, I believe I have one more public execution to do for another dragon, but I do not want to wish for another. Same goes for pegasi and griffons and all of that, right now you shouldnt have them and if you enter Avaren with one it will be detained and it's head put near the blue dragon's upon the gates for a warning to all.
But dragons arent the only mounts needing to be addressed.
I do not know if you guys realize, but horses, especially decent ones, are really expensive because of the fact you need to buy the horse (a large fee) and the fact you need a Stable to put it in and feed it and such. No normal person is going to logically own an amazing horse, I am sorry. So maybe that should be added to this.
I think things like cats and dogs and birds and the like, as long as they are *normal* then they should be allowed to be kept, but major things need to be taken into some consideration and making someone earn it is the best way I believe.

Though I have yet to bother with looking for one, I doubt it is at all possible for an aspiring warrior of the middle ages (i.e. anyone below level four or so) to have a powerful warhorse.. perhaps a work horse or mule given as a gift by the family, but not a purebred steed O.o

Well then, since it seems to be an idea generally supported, now I'll need to get a slew of ideas for what creatures to actually have as pets/mounts, besides dragons and horses, of course. ^_^

Hm, I don't know about this. The little pets like maybe a bird or a dog, something fun I think is alright.
People already abused dragons and such, and somehow I don't think its a good idea to put them in the plot line. Besides this is more a medieval setting, I thought, than a mystical world all together thats 'like' medieval times. I mean characters have real religions, theres mentions ov countries that do exist, and so on.
Eh, personally, all together, I just don't like the dragon/griffin thing. Horses make sense though, they were common I can see it as like a special gift to high level warriors with a lot ov money. For mages, I can see maybe, a unicorn (but only available in the mage city).
I hope you can grasp the general concept I was trying to get out.

Of course, there should be special cases. Like if there is a character that can keep their pet under controll and not bring it everywhere... Kinda like a guardian. Something that only appears to aid it's "master" You know... Like S-*is cuffed by older brother*

I have an idea I just thought about for the dragons...
Have it be a test. Have it so that if someone really really wants a dragon they have to go through their training person (Thurel, Muryllis) and have to go through and RPing test about their quality and their skill. Make it so those two are round 1 for this. Then make it so that if they really want a dragon then they need to do another round. Their leader will send them on a quest to capture a dragon in one of the outerland boards. The dragon will be played by a more capable RPer that the admin should choose. If the player can overcome and subdue the dragon, then they may keep it as a pet.
But it should require that you have skill IC and decent writing OOC to avoid abuse
My idea.
Because if you just make it a level requirement and money requirement...you are opening yourself up for a lot of abuse again with the dragons.
As for other animals you could use...
Make things like hunting dogs available. Not the mutts that everyone else would have, different breeds of hunting dogs that would be available, or war dogs, like the great hounds that people would take into battle. You can do the same with messenger hawks or hunting hawks (difference)
You should make it for the horses that you can only get certain level ones at certain levels and that they cost different, there shouldnt be a generic 'Horse' option...
You could make Camels an option and do the same....
I don't know what other animals would be practical...

O.o
Anyway, I like Mia's idea... that way, only someone worthy of being called a 'Good RPer' would be worthy of being tested to get a dragon.. hehehe...
We could have merchant characters drain people's money on "Dragon's Breath Protection Shields" and the like.. *falls asleep*

Hmm, yes, and that idea of rping to earn the dragon can extend to other powerful magical critters, ie griffins, serpents, wurms, unicorns, Thrushes, phoenixes, kavus, pegasei, drakes, pterons, saurians (I could have some excellent ideas on these, given my hobby and career path).
For other mount ideas, elephants were used as "heavy armor" units way back when. An expensive, high level type i would think. Armadons, mammoths and mastodons(yes there is a difference) could fall into this category. other critters, bears, wolves, hunting cats, boars (good for combat), eagles, ravens, insects( which could then have certain powers outlined) anurids/frogs/toads. I'll have for you as soon as I pass this mental block.
