Well, it is a good guide, but there is one issue I would like to address: That of a warrior only being able to use their chosen weapon. For example, my character is an archer, but what is she to do when caught in close quaters and forced to fight? For that reason when I wrote her profile, I gave her a pair of daggers. I'm not saying that she is an amazing figheter with the knife, or even a slightly-better-than average fighter, I'm just giving her a weapon that makes sense for her to carry.
My personal opinion is if it makes sense for a character to have at least rudimentry knowledge of another weapon, then they shouldn't be penalized for it.

Unfortunately, I don't have the willpower to read all of that, but having read the first few paragraphs, it was quite a piece of work. Although, now the problem is to get people to actually do what it says. This guide has been up for quite a while and most of the posts have less than average grammar and are painfully short. Thus, it makes it impossible for me to thoroughly address what they have said. I strongly urge for everyone to read this. I applaud you, Protege. (I would vote by my computer is being stupid... )

Woa... really long... but it works. Aside from what everyoneelse has said, Id' say that it works. But, I think that mages should have a little education with a small, light weapon, bcause think about it. sya you are a mage, and you get caught in combat. well, sure you an use your abilities, but what happens when you use up your energy supply? like say you are standing there and cast an enourmous spell. then , you need a bit to recover, but you'd need to still be able to defend yourself.
Also, I think that once you master something, like completely master it, you should be able to go on to something else. Example. Say a member of the militia gets all the way to master assasin. shouldnt they be allowed to study magic if they wish and augment their skills? It makes sense to me.

On the topic of multiple weapons: I cannot say if I mentioned this in my paper or not, it's been too long since I read it (one of my pitfalls, laziness had me there.) But, I am not entirely opposed to you using another weapon. I mean that you shouldn't say you are skilled with that weapon just as you are with the first. For example, if you are an archer, and you had a sword, then I wouldn't want you to act like a master of the blade, maybe only a master of a few tricks to get you away from your opponent. I feel as if I have an idea of how to elaborate or go on about this, but as my time on right now is limited to 3 minutes, I will not delve into my mind to figure it out.
On the topic of making people do what it says, that is not my true goal. My goal is simply to make things better, but not fall into a form I portrayed here. Partially because that form is very flawed, and partially because then I wouldn't have anything to complain about. Also, just because people read this guide does not mean they will follow it. Possibly because I am just a regular old chap here, not anyone of power or importance, but most likely because they choose not to, preferring to do what they want. After all, there is no rule saying they have to do this.
And on the topic of people branching out, we are covering that in a different topic, Shadow. I cannot recall what one it is, unfortunately.
