((As I noted in my post, the diamond is already in the shape of a bird. I doubt Verdan, as a simple Scholar, has the magical potential required to shape a [magically] powerful material like diamond.))

(( ((Godmodding my pencil = big nono.)) "Good enough," the Spellweaver said, snatching the pencil out of Verdan's hand and flicking it into the air, not bothering to watch as it formed into a very fine powder. "Next," he continued, jamming a hand deep into one of his robe pockets, "I want you to take this diamond sculpture of a bird-" he pulled one out "-and teach it to fly." Indeed, the man had a habit of assigning seemingly pointless tasks. However, this wasn't entirely pointless - the point was that it is funny to watch someone attempt to teach an animated bird - made of heavy diamond, impossible to infuse with magic by all but the most powerful of mages - to fly. "Good luck," he cackled. ))

((Alright. Fine))
Accepting the diamond sculpture and feeling its weight in his hands, Verdan wondered how he was going to infuse this giant hunk of stone with enough magic to make it fly? Not even the most potent mages could do that, and Verdan was a mere Scholar. Was this old man laughing at him? Probably.
Taking the stone and holding it out in his hands, Verdan tried to force his own mind into that of the bird. However, the stone merely reflected Verdan's attempt, causing him to stagger slightly. Stupid bird. The young Scholar violently shook his head to stop all the thoughts that were bouncing around aimlessly. Alright. Fine. With that, Verdan decided a different approach. Taking whatever threads of magic he can get from the air around him and the bird, he wove them around the bird, making a sort of makeshift puppet. Pulling on those threads, he attempted to move the bird, but the threads were weak. They snapped almost as soon as Verdan tried to manipulate them.
"Grr!! How do you expect me to do this?! I bet you can't even teach this piece of crap to fly!" he exploded in a fit of rage. What did this old fart expect from him? Verdan was a mere Scholar, but he was given a task that an Archmage would find difficult.
