The doors to the Chapel creaked open to reveal one tall figure entering it’s great halls. She was a girl who looked to be no more then 19 years old, with a runner’s build. Her clothing was that of a simple townsfolk, though she was newly going to be a militia of Avaren to serve the Church. Deep red locks fell down her back and bright blue eyes were staring forward into the well-lit interior of the church where everyone was walking around praying to God or doing his will, tending to the candles and other artifacts. There was the great altar in the front decorated with many things, but Scarlet didn’t dare approach. The girl took a seat in one of the pews in the back, far away from any of the other townsfolk, because she didn’t want anyone to see. If you looked closely, you would see why. Scarlet was crying.
Tears gently ran down her face even though her body was still from any sobs, and there was a forlorn hold to her body. When a sister loses a sister, it is usually a heartbreaking thing. When a sister condemns a sister, it hurts even more even when the fault is their own. That is what Scarlet had done to her younger sister Mia, who was a 13 year old girl. A few days ago it had happened, and every day since she had been praying for her younger sibling, hoping that everything was alright. She would never forgive herself if something happened to Mia on her own fault.
But the problem was…the girl was a heathen. Since the announcing of the Cleansing of Avaren using the signs all around town, people had been on edge for those not doing God’s will. Mia had been one of them. How had Scarlet been so fooled? Her sister had attended Church, was loyal to Avaren and it’s monarchs and it’s diety. How could she see that her baby sister was one of those heathens against their church.
You did what you had to do. Scarlet thought to herself, clenching her fists tight together against the harsher tears. All the same, please God…guard my sister. She may be a heathen but she was loyal to you at some time. Please save her. Her thoughts continued as she sat there in the pew. One of the women that worked at the Chapel recognized the tall girl and walked over, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. “Why, Ms. Novendot, where is the younger child today? It is odd not seeing Mia in her pew at the front.” She said in an elderly voice.
Scarlet looked up and gave a watery smile. “I do not believe Mia will be joining us for some time Sister, I am sorry.” At that the woman shook her head and patted Scarlet on the shoulder. “Well, that is a sad day indeed when that child’s smile doesn’t illuminate our windows.” And with that the woman was gone, leaving Scarlet there still feeling sorry for her actions.
